What Serialization Strategy available in UIMA-AS remote AE communication?

As per below link
https://uima.apache.org/d/uima-as-2.10.3/uima_async_scaleout.html#ugr.ref.async.deploy.descriptor.ae
UIMA-AS allows only binary or XMI serialization.
I believe XMI is not efficient and binary does not work for remote AE.
Are there any other options available like json, protocol buffer, etc. ??
If not then how to add our own options ??
