Why is copying a 12 GB file into an external drive taking slower and slower?

I am done copying four 12GB files, and it was fast. The last one though, is identical yet gets slower and slower to copy. It's now at 9 GB and it's speed is 10 MB/s. Initially, its speed is 70+ MB/s. I have never had this problem before, can anyone please tell me what to do?

It's a trajectory file, by the way, if you're interested. Also, space is not a problem for my external drive, because it has a 1 TB capacity and is barely used.

Thank you so much.

EDIT: Now at 8.8 MB/s

  • How much RAM does your machine have? What app are you using to copy files?

  • 13071 MB is available, @WinEunuuchs2Unix. also I just use the default app to copy the files. My ubuntu version is 16.04.

  • Please describe your external drive: What kind of drive is it (brand name and model, what kind of hardware)? What file system is there in the external drive? How is it connected (USB 2 or 3)? - I would suspect that writing to the hardware is the bottleneck, and when the RAM buffer is getting full, it has to write to the memory on the drive before it can receive more data from the copy process. This is very typical of pendrives, but should not be such a big problem with SSDs and HDDs, unless they are damaged or the file system is damaged or very fragmented.

  • Does the external HDD enclosure have its own external power supply? Is it a USB3 enclosure? Is this connected via USB3, or USB2 port?
