cinnamon layout persistently staying after getting back from lightdm to gdm3, in Ubuntu 18.04

I have a serious problem with getting the original layout of Ubuntu 18.04
after trying the mint cinnamon "over bionic beaver", which actually broke my Ubuntu 18.04 I reverted from lightdm to dgm3 which I hopped to get me to the original state of Ubuntu 18.04. Totally not the case:
- My touchpad selection, i.e. one tap, double tap selecting/opening files no longer works, I have to use keyboard's "ENTER" open files, and depress the touchpad to select or perform double click. The cursor mobility is proper though.
- The original layout and functionality of the interface was very good, especially in comparison to the left hand window closing/maximazing/minimizing feature.
