repairing or new install

NEWBIE to LINUX
- Acer Laptop dual graphics, came with Linux Lite installed on 1 gig HD
- Moved 1 gig HD to external 3.0 USB (Linux Lite hangs on boot)
- Have created USB 64gb USB 3.0 SD with Ubuntu 18.04 install created by Rufus
- External 1gb has 2 partitions that cannot be read with C:/ HD (Win 10) SSD running.
- I believe Linux Lite is on those two partitions (F) (G)
- Seeking recommendation on best option: i.e. Disconnect Internal HD and boot to USB SD and try to overwrite with Linux 18.04 to f & g OR ???????
