Listen to audio using bluetooth headphones without restarting VLC

How can I get VLC to switch to the new default audio sink without restarting VLC?

This comes up when taking a break from watching a movie in VLC using airpods. The airpods disconnect for a while and when they come back and get reconnected using the steps below, VLC plays audio out of the speakers.

  1. Use blueman-applet to connect to airpods as "Audio Sink"

  2. Use pavucontrol to set the default sink to airpods ("Set as fallback")

At this point, VLC plays out of laptop speakers, but I'd like it to play out of the airpods.

This is probably not specific to VLC.

Ubuntu 16.04.5 using i3wm
