Hyperdeterminant in Macaulay2

The hyperdeterminant command in Macaulay2 for a $atimes b_1times ...times b_n$-tensor only works for tensors whose size satisfies
$$a-sum_{i=1}^n(b_i-1)=1.$$
Is there a reason for this? Does anyone know which algorithm underlies the computation? Is there a way to bypass the issue?
