Sonatype Nexus 3 Docker Proxy for Elastic.co

Has anyone managed to create a docker proxy repository for https://docker.elastic.co/ in Sonatype Nexus 3?
I've tried, but all I seem to get are weird authentication errors yet I can pull images on the CLI from docker.elastic.co without issue. At the moment I get this when I try to search:
docker search nexus-server:elastic-proxy-port/kibana
Error response from daemon: Unexpected status code 500
If I then look in the logs, i see this:
*UNKNOWN org.sonatype.nexus.repository.httpbridge.internal.ViewServlet -
Failure servicing: GET /repository/elastic-docker/v1/search?q=kibana&n=25
java.lang.IllegalStateException: No case for assetKind: SEARCH
The Nexus server does work, searching Docker Hub etc over a proxy is fine.
Like I said, PULLing works so this runs fine:
docker pull nexus-server:elastic-proxy-port/kibana/kibana:6.5.0
I'm interested in doing this as hub.docker.com (really registry-1.docker.io) doesn't always carry the latest images from elastic.co
docker elasticsearch nexus3

Not sure how much help they will be as its just standard Docker stuff, but I've added them.
