Creating modules in Shiny: linking checkboxInputs from module.R to observeEvents in app.R

I'm trying to create a module containing the menuItems and checkboxInputs in a module.R script and link these inputs to observeEvents in app.R

I'd be grateful for any suggestions as after searching widely on the web, I'm getting the following error:

ERROR: cannot coerce type 'closure' to vector of type 'character'

This is my module.R file:

library(modules)
library(shiny)
library(shinydashboard)

dashboardSidebarUI2 <- function(id) {
ns <- NS(id)
tagList(

checkboxInput(inputId = ns("pow_id"), label = "Power plants (all)", value = FALSE)

)

setup<-function(input,output,session,sel){
sel<-reactive({input$pow_id})
return(sel)
}

}

The relevant part in app.R:

library(modules)
library(shiny)
library(shinydashboard)

source("module.R"),
dashboardSidebar(
width = 310,
sidebarMenu(

dashboardSidebarUI2("sel"),

)
)

After further research, I found the following code works:

In module.R:

dashboardSidebarUI2 <- function(id) {
ns <- NS(id)
tagList(
checkboxInput(inputId = ns("pow_id"), label = "Power plants (all)", value = FALSE)

)
}

setup<-function(input,output,session){

reactive({input$pow_id})
}

In app.R:

source("module.R"),

dashboardSidebar(
width = 310,
sidebarMenu(

dashboardSidebarUI2("basic"),

)
)

server <- function(input, output, session) {
pow_id <- callModule(setup,"basic")

observeEvent(pow_id(), {
ib <- pow_id()

It has taken a while to sort this out. These resources I found especially useful:
https://itsalocke.com/blog/shiny-module-design-patterns-pass-module-inputs-to-other-modules/
https://github.com/rstudio/webinars/blob/master/19-Understanding-modules/01-Modules-Webinar.pdf

However, if would be good to know if there is a more correct/alternative method.

Thanks.
