Problem triggering change event from within CKEditor plug-in

I have a custom CKEditor plug-in that inserts mp3 audio content. For example,

<span class="my-audio" data-widget="myaudio"><button type="button" class="my-button-audio icon-play" data-user-file-name="rose-throated-becard.mp3" data-src-id="myfile.mp3" data-src-type="some-type" disabled="disabled"></button></span>

The plug-in works fine. My current challenge is when the value of the data-src-type attribute is "some-type" to automatically convert it to "some-other-type" and have a change event occur so that my listener on the change event will be triggered and the stored content will be updated.
Seems simple but using this.editor.fire('change') proved insufficient. It only works when I put it in a timeout:

var that = this;
setTimeout(function() {
that.editor.fire('change');
}, 1);

Can anyone give me an alternative solution? I don't like using arbitrary timeouts. I'm sure there's a better way to do this.
