Can't ping Windows server by hostname for AD DC Samba integration

I'm attempting to setup a samba share on our Ubuntu server at work to integrate with our Windows Domain Controller for the folder permissions.
However I am unable to ping mcsvsdc.local
which is the hostname of the domain controller.
It will let me ping 10.0.0.213 which is the internal address of this machine but not the hostname. I initially thought it would be an issue with the DNS however the DNS server on the Ubuntu machine is set to 10.0.0.213 so it should work as that server also has a DNS service running.
What other steps can I do to debug this issue as other machines on our network with 10.0.0.213 as the DNS can resolve mcsvsdc.local
?
The reason I need this is because samba can't actually resolve the domain to integrate properly.
