14.04 to 18.04 performance issues (VirtualBox/Vagrant)

This is a shot in the dark.

We have an application running 14.04 under a VirtualBox VM.

Using the same VirtualBox VM settings/hardware, only with the ubuntu/bionic64 box, we are noticing a huge performance difference.

It is most notable around MySQL, especially database schema creation. Tweaking MySQL to use only one file for the database increase performance, but still well below 14.04 levels.

The issue appears to be around IO. Both systems use a single disk with ext4 and defaults. I do notice jdb2 taking about 3-8% of IO during slow operations on 18.04.

I've tried disabling the Spectre/Metldown patches with no noticeable affect. I also tuned the FS with journal_data_writeback set.

Any advice or similar experiences? We are struggling.
