External disk no longer working.. but is on other systems

0

I have a 2014 MacMini running 18.04, freshly built a couple of weeks ago. It's connected to an external 6Tb Seagate drive, configured as NTFS. I have only a few apps, including Samba and Plex. This set up was to replace an ageing Dell Optiplex, where I moved the external drive from.

It has been working fine for the last 2 weeks, however the external drive now appears to have performance problems. Ie. copying a 500mb file is calculated to take 26 hours. If I plug the drive back into the old Optiplex (I think is running Ubuntu 12) then it reads / writes without a problem.

I've downloaded a disk utility, but it can't enable SMART on the drive and hence couldn't go any further.

I'm fine to go out and buy another drive, but only if it's needed.. and I suspect it's not. But there again, it was working for a few weeks - so maybe it is?

I've had a search and can't find any similar performance / not performance problems.

Can anyone direct me to something to check please?

Thank you

Ben

PS. Can't remember why it's formatted as NTFS, that decision was about 3 years ago!
