Mirror displays, with main display portrait-configured
I'm setting up Ubuntu 18.10 one step at a time on my Jumper EZPad Mini 3, a cheap Chinese Windows tablet. I've already made it to initial usable status (WiFi/BT works) and now I'm testing multi-display functionalities. In doing this I've hit a kinda unique problem.
This tablet, like many other Chinese 8-inchers, seems to have a portrait-configured/mounted(?) display - the boot logo, the BIOS GUI, GRUB, etc. all display in portrait. After booting into the OS it also stays portrait, until I turn autorotation on, which enables the screen to correctly rotate to landscape. However, the screen resolution shown in Settings is still portrait (800x1280). Manually setting a landscape resolution (e.g. 1280x800), either via Settings or via xrandr, locks up the tablet and turns the display black, forcing me to reboot with the REISUB key combo.
xrandr output under portrait:

Plugging an external monitor in, it defaults to Joined mode and ignores autorotation, which resets the main display back to portrait. In this case I can follow the instructions outlined in this answer to manually apply a rotation to the main display, making it usable.
Mirror mode is a different story though. The resolutions available are all landscape, and choosing any will presumably set that resolution on the main display, freezing the tablet/display.
Based on the situation, is there a way I can get mirror mode working properly? Furthermore (optional), can I configure Ubuntu so it somehow recognizes the display as landscape-mounted?

Plugging an external monitor in, it defaults to Joined mode and ignores autorotation, which resets the main display back to portrait. In this case I can follow the instructions outlined in this answer to manually apply a rotation to the main display, making it usable.
Mirror mode is a different story though. The resolutions available are all landscape, and choosing any will presumably set that resolution on the main display, freezing the tablet/display.
Based on the situation, is there a way I can get mirror mode working properly? Furthermore (optional), can I configure Ubuntu so it somehow recognizes the display as landscape-mounted?
