gmail api returning 401 “Not Logged In”?

I'm integrating the google auth and gmail api in order to read a user's emails in my chrome extension. I have a custom sign in button which when clicked calls this login()
function:
function login() {
console.log('~~~ attempting login ~~~');
chrome.identity.getAuthToken({interactive: true}, authorize);
}
function authorize(result) {
gapi.auth.authorize({
client_id: '9jkdmabc1fml8i8u.apps.googleusercontent.com',
immediate: true,
scope: 'https://www.googleapis.com/auth/gmail.readonly'
},
function(){
gapi.client.load('gmail', 'v1', getEmails);
});
}
This is turn calls the function to retrieve the emails which I got from the gmail api docs:
function getEmails(callback) {
var getPageOfMessages = function(request, result) {
request.execute(function(resp) {
console.log(resp)
result = result.concat(resp.messages);
var nextPageToken = resp.nextPageToken;
if (nextPageToken) {
request = gapi.client.gmail.users.messages.list({
'userId': 'me',
'pageToken': nextPageToken,
});
getPageOfMessages(request, result);
} else {
callback(result);
}
});
};
var initialRequest = gapi.client.gmail.users.messages.list({
'userId': 'me',
});
getPageOfMessages(initialRequest, );
}
However, when I got out resp
I get a 401 Login Required
error. This is strange because I previously signed in when the google auth dialog popped up, which it's not popping up in this case.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

I think there is something wrong with your authorization process. Try following the sample for identity API present in the chrome documents. Following the sample will help you understand how to properly authorize a request Google APIs in chrome.
