Ubuntu boots to a black screen with a blinking cursor after upgrading from 14.04 to 15.10

I was trying to fix my brightness controls for i3. After adding the file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf as in this guide xbacklight: No outputs have backlight property - No /sys/class/backlight folder I restarted my computer and I can no longer log in. I get to login screen and when I try to login the screen turns black and go back to login screen. I can't seem to get into GRUB either. I tried holding LSHIFT many times but it just goes straight to login screen.
It wont let me log in through the virtual consoles either.
