Virtualbox Graphics glitches and software rendering mode [closed]

I have virtualbox running on an AMD processor on W7 with a GTX 1060. I am attempting to make a linux mint virtual box, and when I boot from disk and click 'start linux mint' after pressing F6, I get weird graphics glitches as shown here:
enter image description here

When I boot from compatibility mode, things begin to work, albeit very slowly. I am assuming there is some problem in the virtualbox settings or i am missing a driver, but I am clueless as to what needs to be done.

When I press CTRL + ALT + F2 then CTRL + ALT + F7, my graphics revert back to normal, but then it renders in software mode which is crazy slow. This also happens with the Ubuntu-16.04.5-desktop-i386 iso. So it is not only mint, I have also tried redownloading the ISO 3 times.

enter image description here

My problem is not related to guest additions. I followed the instructions on the thread and it didn't resolve my issue.

  • Not a duplicate, I tried reinstalling guest additions before posting. I also enabled 3D and 2D acceleration and no change.
