karabiner elements (and xmodmap): using left command as ctrl and right command as alt doesn't work for the...

My configuration:
- Use key on the left of the spacebar (left command) as Control
- Use the key on the right of the spacebar (right command) as Alt
Purpose: press both Control and Alt with thumbs easily (I'm an Emacs user).
Problem: with the MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) built-in keyboard, pressing 1. left command (reconfigured to Control), 2. right command (reconfigured to Alt) and 3. any key on the zxcv row, does not have any response.
Other observations:
- same problem with xmodmap on Debian (I installed Debian on a MacBook Air).
- it works if I press left control (it's still Control) and right command (reconfigured to Alt).
- it works for rows other than the zxcv row.
- it works for external keyboards (Apple wired keyboard with numpad, Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic) with a similar setup.
Question:
Why and how to make it work?
macos emacs keyboard xmodmap karabiner

I have a similar but different issue on an (originally) Windows keyboard. I remapped the right Alt key to a 2nd command key. Now I do not get ANY response when pressing right-Command (= ex Alt) and left-Alt. . . . May be a hint that keys with identical "original mapping" don't like cooperation ?!? . . . I can't though reproduce your constricted zxcv-issue … (Use Karabiner's EventViewer to see which keys actually work in combination ?!?)
