Why are the special characters missing if I open my tex file on another computer?

Hy everybody,

I'm writing my thesis since June and a week before the deadline my laptop broke down. I could save the tex files and pictures to another laptop and I installed the latest MikTex 2.9. I updated everything and I opened my Tex file to finish my thesis. As I opened it every special character (ä,°,á,é etc.) are missing and I got a character instead. After compiling I got (ı̈¿ 12 r) instead of ü and some other messed up things. I'm not willing to change every to the correct character, so please someone help me what the hell happened and how can I solve this issue.
Thx
Attila

Make a backup. Then try to find out which encoding the files have and if you are opening them with this encoding.

  • Dear Ulrike, I managed to make a backup and (after trying to understand why this happens) I tried to open it with different encodings. The fun fact is that the original encoding was UTF 8 'til now. Now it doesn't recognize the characters any more. BUT fortunately I opened it with windows 1252 encoding, which worked EXCEPT that I'm from Hungary and my address is written on the title page and I had to change the ő character to ö in the city's name, because it's not included in the encoding. Anyway you saved my Thesis, thank you for the help,
