How to use Cytoscape.js with typescript

I'm trying to use Cytoscape.js with typescript but I'm having issues with the compiler.
I used npm install -save cytoscape

I get the following error:

error TS1192: Module '"C:/Work/node_modules/@types/cytoscape/index"' has no default export. 2 import cytoscape from 'cytoscape';

import cytoscape from 'cytoscape';

var cy = (<any>window).cy = cytoscape(CytoscapeDefaults.defaults);

Interestingly enough, the intellisense shows the parameters to pass to cytoscape.

If I try and run it, I get pretty much the same error:

cytoscape_1.default is not a function

Here's my tsconfig.json

          I found this issue on github, that might solve your problem:

          "compilerOptions": {
          "sourceMap": true,
          "module": "esnext",
          "moduleResolution": "node",
          "target": "es5",
          "jsx": "react",
          "allowSyntheticDefaultImports": true, // that is probably the important one
          "esModuleInterop": true, // this also
          "typeRoots": [
          "./node_modules/@types/"
          ],
          }

          Another issue on the topic

            I found this issue on github, that might solve your problem:

            "compilerOptions": {
            "sourceMap": true,
            "module": "esnext",
            "moduleResolution": "node",
            "target": "es5",
            "jsx": "react",
            "allowSyntheticDefaultImports": true, // that is probably the important one
            "esModuleInterop": true, // this also
            "typeRoots": [
            "./node_modules/@types/"
            ],
            }
