How to configure head position at logon for multihead setup with nvidia on Ubuntu 18.04

I'm having some issues trying to configure a multihead setup on 18.04 using the nvidia proprietary drivers. I've managed to get my monitor configuration to persist through restarts by saving my x configuration file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf
after performing the configuration in the Nvidia X Server Settings utility, which was the first issue I dealt with. Now I'm dealing with getting GDM to use this configuration at logon. I've been able to get this to work in the past by copying monitors.xml
from my home directory to the home folder for the GDM user. However, for this setup, I noticed that monitors.xml
wasn't generated when I went to look for it, which I learned was because I never configured the monitor position in Settings > Devices > Displays
as I had on previous installs. I was able to get the file to generate by just opening the Displays menu and hitting apply. This got me thinking, if Nvidia's X Server Settings utility doesn't generate or update monitors.xml
, if I ever change my monitor positioning, I'll have to make the changes in the Devices > Displays menu again just to update the file before I copy it to the GDM user again. Is there a better way to get GDM to use my monitor configuration at logon? I've seen a couple of different answers to this question that mentioned using a script to do this, but a lot of them were for older Ubuntu versions on Unity so I wasn't sure if they still apply.
