Welcome to TeX.SX! Could you please clarify which particular aspects you are unable to achieve?

A minimal working example would be cool. A solution depends on the document class.

Providing an MWE (Minimal Working Example) is mostly recommanded for your future questions.
I don't know which package you are using but the fancyhdr is made for you :
documentclass{book}
usepackage{lipsum} %for filler text
usepackage{fancyhdr}
pagestyle{fancy}
fancyhead[RE,LO]{thepage}
fancyhead[RO,LE]{leftmark}
fancyfoot[C]{}
fancypagestyle{plain}{
fancyhf{}
fancyhead[RE,LO]{thepage}
fancyhead[RO,LE]{leftmark}
renewcommand{headrulewidth}{1pt}
}
begin{document}
chapter{A nice chapter}
lipsum[1-10]
end{document}
This should solve your problem.
If the op uses a koma-class or memoir, fancyhdr is not the solution.

A minimal working example would be cool. A solution depends on the document class.
