English US Intl keyboard not working

I installed US Intl keyboard, with dead keys. This is on Ubuntu 18.04, packages are up to date.
However, whenever I type `a, I expect that this would be converted to á. However it doesn't do it.
I also had Chinese (Intelligent Pinyin) IME installed.
The default keyboard is English (US).
Any help is very much appreciated.

Hmm.. I observed the same thing, but after having rebooted, it works as expected. So please reboot and let us know if it makes a difference.
