Installing zsh on remote server disabled ssh login?

-1

First time server admin. I have a remote VPS running Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS.

  1. I logged in as root and created a new sudo user.

  2. I logged in as the new user and disabled password login to the the root account.

  3. I generated ssh keys for the new user account.

  4. I disabled password login to the new user account (PasswordAuthentication no in /etc/ssh/sshd_config). EDIT: Judging from the logs, I might not have done this correctly, though I still can't log in with my password.

So far, so good. I could ssh in to my remote server using my local ssh key, without entering a password.

  1. I installed zsh on the remote server and set it as the default shell using sudo usermod -s /usr/bin/zsh $(whoami).

  2. I restarted the server and was logged out.

Since then, I haven't been able to access my server at all. The ssh local key doesn't work, and passwords for the root account and user account don't work. I get Permission denied, please try again. on all attempts.

Is there a fix?
